Young Researchers Safety Project

06/04/2005

Harrow Children's Fund hosted a special event on Thursday March 31st, when over 100 people packed into Kodak Sports Centre to view the results of a project to find out young people's views on safety in Harrow. The children, aged between 10 and 13, had been given digital camera for a week with the task of taking photos on the theme. The result was an impressive selection of photographs, exhibited at the event, which showed what really matters to Harrow children and highlighted the abundant artistic talent of the young photographers. The photos showed a number of topics ranging from concern about pollution to feelings about family and home, and highlighted how sensitive children are to their surroundings and their awareness and concern over topical issues.

A DVD created and performed by the children was also shown at the event, and complimented the photos in showing what the young people really thought about living in Harrow. Lisa Budd, Participation Officer at Harrow Children's Services, said: "The children involved in the project have used digital technology to identify things that make them feel safe and unsafe: this is very important as it gives a true understanding of safety in Harrow through the eyes of a child". The audience were also treated to a variety of displays promoting the work of the Children's Fund, and a number of young people showed off their skill with some excellent dances and performances. After enjoying the show and viewing the safety DVD, the Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Lurline Champagne, congratulated the young people involved and presented them with their certificates.
